When you get the car you’ve always wanted or have just recently purchased a used car in NJ from a used car dealer, you will want to be sure to take the best care possible of your newly prized possession. It is a substantial investment and you should be sure to make certain to keep it in the best condition possible by following some rules for basic maintenance. By doing so, you will avoid costly repairs and problems down the road, so to speak.

First of all, be sure to keep your car running smoothly with regular oil changes. This is one of the most important things you can do. The oil should be changed at least every 3,000 miles as the oil breaks down and can lead to engine wear and the oil filter must also be changed as it absorbs the contaminants that accumulate over time in between oil changes.

Wash your vehicle regularly and give it a nice coat of wax every now and then to keep it’s shine and luster. This will also help the paint to look new and prevent corrosion and protect it from the elements. On the east coast, the climate and seasonal changes are particularly tough on cars. Also, anywhere near the ocean, the climate has an effect on cars that can hurt it in the long run. Regular washing and waxing will help keep off the dirt, grime and the elements and keep the surfaces protected and looking good.

Always use good quality genuine spare parts when having any parts replaced. Sometimes an aftermarket or generic part is cheaper but in the long run you will it’s more reliable to go with the genuine, quality, brand name replacement parts.

Keep a check on your tire pressure and make sure you check the pressure regularly, maybe about once every week or two. If the tires are not inflated correctly, that can lead to faster wear and in the worst case scenario, it could cause a dangerous situation such as a skid or a blowout. Also make sure to
have the alignment checked on a regular basis as well. You also want to have the tires rotated on a schedule so they will wear evenly.

Find a good and reliable mechanic and have your car checked and maintained at least once a year. He or she can check the brakes, fluid levels, suspension, transmission, and so on. If you suspect that something is not working correctly, take it immediately to a dealer or reputable mechanic. Don’t wait until a situation gets so bad that you have expensive and major problems that could have been avoided.

Follow these simple, basic rules and you will have a car that lasts as long as it can and give you your money’s worth.
